Darrell Brown pursued numerous career goals during his lifetime—law enforcement, higher education, church leadership, government and public service and banking. “Public service was truly the heart of Darrell Brown,” as his obituary states. He passed away on January 11 in Stephenville. He was 60.
Brown fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer in 1988, beginning his professional career with the Tarleton State University Police Department as a certified peace officer. His dedication and leadership soon led to his promotion to sergeant before he transitioned to a broader calling in community and professional service. Over the years, Brown continued to make a meaningful impact through his leadership with STAR Council, followed by 17 years with Town & Country Bank in Stephenville, where he served as vice president of business development.
During his tenure at Town & Country Bank, Brown was actively involved in the Texas community banking industry. He was a member of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) and served as chair of the IBAT Leadership Division. In 2024, he reunited with his IBAT family at the association’s 50th Annual Convention, where he led the morning devotional and proudly sang the national anthem at the opening general session—a moment many will long remember.
“Darrell was a true friend to so many, one of the finest gentlemen many of us have ever known and a beloved member of the IBAT family,” the association notes in a release about Brown’s passing.
After almost two decades of banking, Brown’s passion for higher education and student engagement drew him back to Tarleton State University, where he spent 11 years in leadership roles within the student affairs department. Most recently, he served as the director of administrative services for the City of Stephenville. Beyond his professional career, he served multiple churches—Solomon Temple Baptist Church in Stamford, St. John Baptist and First Baptist Church in Stephenville and Calvary Baptist in Stephenville. As an ordained deacon and worship leader, his ministry touched countless lives.
Brown’s service extended to countless community organizations. He was a member of Rotary International, serving as chapter president, and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, cherishing the bond of brotherhood that it brought throughout his life. He gave generously of his time and leadership to numerous boards and committees, including the Independent Bankers Association of Texas, Stephenville Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Tarleton Alumni Association board, Stephenville City Council, Erath County United Way and the Mt. Olive Cemetery board. Brown had a gift for bringing people together, planning memorable community events such as the MLK Breakfasts at Tarleton State University and with the City of Stephenville, Western Swing Festival and Heavenly Highway Hymn Sings. He was eagerly preparing for the National Southern Gospel Convention scheduled for this spring in Stephenville.
Brown is survived by his wife of nearly 33 years, Angie Brown, a son and daughter and their spouses, two grandchildren and scores of additional family and friends.
