Texas businessman and banking pioneer Walter Johnson, founder of Houston-based Amegy Bank, will celebrate his 90th birthday on February 19, marking a lifetime of leadership that has helped shape Houston’s financial ecosystem and the broader Texas economy. In recognition of his impact, Mary Nan Huffman, a City of Houston council member, will present Johnson with an official proclamation declaring February 19 as “Walter Johnson Day.”
Johnson founded Amegy Bank in 1990 with a focus on relationship banking and local decision‑making, laying the foundation for what is now one of Texas’ leading banks, with approximately $14 billion in assets and a strong footprint across the Texas Triangle. Still an active, contributing member of the company, Johnson can be found in the office most days of the week and assists with young bankers’ mentorship and business development.
His legacy extends beyond banking, defined by decades of reinvestment in Houston’s communities, support for family‑owned and middle‑market businesses, job creation and long‑term economic stability.
Amegy Bank, a division of Zions Bancorporation NA, operates more than 75 locations across Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth and Central Texas.
