Reyer, Texas Banking Department General Counsel, to Retire

June 15, 2023

Catherine ReyerCatherine Reyer has announced her retirement from the Texas Department of Banking, effective July 31. She has served as general counsel for the department since 2014. As general counsel, she has been responsible for overseeing the legal division and providing advice and counsel to the finance commission, the banking commissioner and other divisions across the agency. She is also responsible for assisting in drafting rules that guide the department’s operations, as well as tracking and analyzing bills filed by legislators impacting the financial services industry in Texas.

“For nearly a decade, Catherine has served the department with a level of professionalism and an understanding of the law that has helped shape our national reputation as a model banking regulatory agency, while assuring we live up to our motto of ‘tough but fair,’” says Charles G. Cooper, commissioner. “Her dedication to excellence has made Catherine a valuable member of our executive team, and we wish her a long and happy retirement.”

Reyer has served the State of Texas for the past 26 years. Prior to joining the Texas Department of Banking, she spent 17 years with the Texas Department of Insurance, in addition to three years in private practice. She earned a BA degree in French from the University of St. Thomas in Houston and her JD degree from the University of Texas–Austin. A resident of Austin since 1989, she is a member of the State Bar of Texas.
