Texas Deputy Banking Commissioner Purdom to Retire

May 16, 2021

Kurt PurdomKurt Purdom, deputy commissioner at the Texas Department of Banking, has announced his retirement effective August 31. The announcement comes after serving more than 39 years in bank regulatory supervision with the Texas Department of Banking. Purdom has held the position of deputy banking commissioner since November 2018.

“Kurt has been part of this agency’s management team for decades, guiding and directing the department’s regulatory mission to provide effective supervision to the industry,” says Charles G. Cooper, commissioner.  “His institutional knowledge and leadership made him a valuable member of our executive team.”

Purdom joined the Texas Department of Banking as an examiner in 1982. In his 39 years of experience in the regulation and supervision of financial service providers, he has held various positions with the Texas Department of Banking, including field examiner, review examiner, regional director, director of strategic support, and director of banking and trust supervision. As deputy commissioner, Purdom has had primary responsibility for overseeing the regulation and supervision of Texas state-chartered banks, which control $345 billion in assets, trust companies with approximately $164 billion in fiduciary assets, foreign bank agencies and representative offices of foreign bank agencies with approximately $92 billion in assets, as well as data processing centers.

Purdom graduated from Texas A&M University with a BBA degree in finance. He is also an honors graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado and a graduate of the Governor’s Executive Development Program. Purdom has participated in the Texas A&M University Commercial Banking Program since 2013 as an instructor, advisory board member and, more recently, as an executive committee member. He also has served on several committees with the Conference of State Bank Supervisors and is a past chairman of the performance standards committee and vice chairman of the Education Foundation.
