Newspaper advertisements celebrate the opening of Montrose National Bank in May 1956.In 1956, Montrose National Bank in Houston opened its doors in response to the needs of an evolving metroplex. Today, both the city and the bank continue to thrive. Central Bank, as it is now known, is celebrating its 70th anniversary, making it “Houston’s longest-serving independent bank,” according to its press release.
“People want to work with people,” notes Robert Mrlik, president and CEO. “Technology, products and services will always evolve, but customers want someone they trust—someone who knows their business, understands their goals and is willing to help them navigate challenges along the way.”
Central Bank’s independent status plays an important role in that philosophy, Mrlik says, noting that the financial institution has the freedom to evaluate lending needs based on more than data. Local market conditions, customer history and information shared during everyday conversations can all help shape decision-making.
The bank’s people-focused philosophy extends to the company culture. In recent years, Central Bank has been recognized as a top workplace in both the Houston Chronicle and USA Today. It was also named Houston’s Best Regional Bank in the Houston Chronicle’s “Best of the Best” awards.
“Many team members have spent years, or even decades, with Central Bank, and that continuity creates stronger relationships and better service for customers,” Mrlik adds.
Current extensive renovations at the bank’s corporate headquarters on Clay Road in Houston promise improved technology and a more comfortable banking experience. Completion of the renovations is slated for early 2027.

Renovations to Central Bank’s West Houston corporate headquarters are slated for completion in early 2027 and include façade improvements, upgraded technology and enhancements designed to create a more comfortable and convenient banking experience.
