Texas Bankers

In Memoriam: Security State Bank’s Gary Dean Edmiston

April 30, 2024

Gary Dean EdmistonLongtime banker and community banking advocate Gary Dean Edmiston, 84, of Odessa passed away on April 26.

Edmiston played tennis while attending North Texas State University. Upon graduating, he also found immense joy in his career as a banker in West Texas, becoming president of Security State Bank in 1979 and later being named chief executive officer. Edmiston retired from Security State Bank in 2005, but continued to work as a consultant for numerous West Texas banks and at the Small Business Development Center at the University of Texas–Permian Basin.

During his career, Edmiston was an integral part of the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) leadership. He served as IBAT chairman from 1998 to 1999, as well as on the organization’s bylaws and nominating committee, PAC steering committee and IBAT Education Foundation. He was also active on the national level with the Independent Community Bankers of America and served on its board of directors.

As accomplished as he was professionally, Edmiston was even more dedicated to his family. “As a dad, he was consistent and intentionally present,” his obituary states. “He always had time for fun activities, memory-making or to offer help and wisdom when needed. He taught his children and grandchildren many lessons by his words and by his actions.”

Edmiston was a devoted husband to Helen for 38 years until her death, then was devoted to Diana for 26 years. He is preceded in death by both wives. He is survived by two children, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, as well as additional family and friends.
