Longtime Texas community banker James Robert “Jim Bob” Parker, 79 of Elkhart passed away October 28 in his home. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. After serving six years in the U.S. Air Force, Parker went to work for Elkhart State Bank in 1968. Upon the passing of his father in 1987, he was named the bank’s chairman of the board and in 1998 he became president and served in that position until 2015. Devoted to his community, Parker selflessly served as fire chief for the Elkhart Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years. He served as a guest instructor at Texas A&M Municipal Fire School for 37 years. He became a licensed pilot and a licensed scuba diver. Parker also spent a lifetime serving others through the numerous organizations of which he was a member.
Parker’s obituary notes that he “was never at a loss for words and always had a story to tell, which will always be fondly remembered. He will also be remembered for his willingness to help a person in need and his generousness [nature].”
Parker is survived by his wife of 29 years, Diane, and his children, Joel Parker, Dan Parker, John Parker, Casey Miller, John Miller and Jeremy Miller. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Justin, Cade, Jack, Kennedy, Elle, Paisleigh, Serenity, Kullen and Grace, as well as his sister, JoNell Nicholson.
