Philip Paul Cloud, former executive vice president and chief credit officer at Bank of the West in Grapevine, passed away on December 3 after a brief stay at Dallas Methodist Hospital. He was 61.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Texas–Arlington, Cloud followed in the footsteps of his father, Roger Cloud, and launched a lifelong career in banking. He started at Continental National Bank in Fort Worth and worked at the Arizona Bank, Security Pacific and Bank of America in Phoenix before returning Grapevine. Cloud completed the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in 1996. He recently retired as executive vice president and chief credit officer from Bank of the West in Grapevine, where he celebrated his 20th anniversary this past June. According to his obituary, Bank of the West was by far his favorite work experience and he enjoyed being a part of the bank’s community banking family.
As an active community member, Cloud was a proud member of the Grapevine AMBUCS and the AMBUCS’ Big Hat Club, Grapevine Rotary Club, Grapevine Municipal Golf Course and Saint Francis Catholic Church. He served as chairman of the board of directors for the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce in 2000, member of the advisory board for the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau (1997–2007) and member of the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Education Foundation board of directors. He frequently volunteered and supported Main Street Days and GrapeFest festivals.
Cloud was given a few nicknames through the years: “Pops” (recently acquired as his grandfather moniker), “Philip 66” (a name his siblings and aunt gave him to tease him growing up), “Tiger” (a nickname his father adopted for him after he had a brief stay as an infant in the hospital and the nurses called him that) and “Puff” or “Puff Daddy” (given by his AMBUCS and golfing buddies). He enjoyed golf, especially with his Sunday morning golf group at the Grapevine Golf Course and was particularly proud of his hole-in-one accomplishment. He also enjoyed playing Texas hold ’em and an occasional poker tournament. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Cloud is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah Naughton Cloud; children, Stephanie and Payton Lambe, Samantha and David Smith, and Shannon Cloud; grandson, Andrew Smith. He is also survived by his mother, Nedah Helton Cloud-Griffith; siblings, Kandie and Allen Kuehn, Mike and Safaa Cloud, Konnie Morris; aunt, Vicki McCall; and several brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Cloud. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff at the Liver Institute at Methodist Dallas.
