Community Bankers Honor BCC’s Smith with Prestigious Chairman’s Award

October 13, 2025

The Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) recently honored Kathy Smith with the IBAT Chairman’s Award. She is the founder and principal of BCC (Bank Compensation Consulting), a Plano-based bank-owned life insurance consulting firm serving banks nationwide. IBAT’s 2024–25 Chair Tracy Harris, chief strategic planning and project officer at Harlingen-based Texas Regional Bank, presented the prestigious award in September during IBAT’s 51st Annual Convention in Fort Worth.

The IBAT Chairman’s Award is the association’s highest honor. It is given to individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to the community banking industry, going above and beyond the call of duty.

Smith co-founded BCC in 2004 with Kelly W. Earls. The company focuses on bank-owned life insurance consulting and executive compensation strategies for banks. Before founding BCC, she worked for more than 30 years in the insurance and financial services industries.

“Kathy is more than just a colleague—she is a cornerstone of the organization,” Harris noted in her presentation of the award. “With her extensive experience, she has become an indispensable resource for countless community bankers and regulators. She has helped us navigate the complex world of executive benefits and compensation. Her expertise is matched only by her passion for helping others succeed.”

Harris continued: “Kathy is a tireless advocate for her clients, consistently going the extra mile to ensure their needs are met. And she is a true friend, bringing warmth, humor and positive energy to every interaction. When Kathy is around, there are sure to be smiles and laughter—and maybe some conversations about golf.”

Smith is recognized as an expert in the community banking sector, often speaking and teaching on executive compensation and benefit design. She frequently presents seminars and teaches courses on compensation and financial planning for banking professionals through national and state financial associations, including the Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. Under her leadership, BCC has received industry accolades, including the IBAT Five*Star Award in 2021, reflecting the firm’s excellence in serving community banks.

Smith holds a degree from the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.
