Community bankers from across the state will gather in San Antonio later this month for the Independent Bankers Association of Texas’ 52nd Annual Convention, a perfect opportunity for education, networking and inspiration for those shaping the future of Texas community banking. Set for September 19–22 at the Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa, the convention will feature nationally recognized keynote speakers, breakout sessions on the latest banking and technology trends, updates on legislative affairs and multiple opportunities to connect with peers.
This year’s keynote speakers are Lt. Col. Dan Rooney and Cord McCoy. A decorated F-16 fighter pilot, two-time Top Gun recipient and founder of the nonprofit organization Folds of Honor, Rooney has built a life around his calling: “inspiring people to help people.” It’s a message that rings true for community bankers, whose work is rooted in service, trust and commitment to their communities. Rooney’s keynote will challenge attendees to “fly into the wind”—to lead with courage, overcome adversity and turn purpose into action. Drawing from three combat tours in Iraq, his continued service with the Oklahoma Air Guard and his experience building Folds of Honor into a nationally recognized organization, Rooney offers practical lessons in resilience, mission-driven leadership and the power of one person to create lasting impact. Since its founding in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 73,000 scholarships totaling more than $340 million to the spouses and children of fallen or disabled military service members and first responders. The USA Today bestselling author of Fly Into the Wind and A Patriot’s Calling, Rooney has inspired more than 1,000 organizations nationwide. His keynote will leave community bankers energized, inspired and reminded of the extraordinary difference they can make when leadership is grounded in purpose.
IBAT’s Convention will provide a powerful message of resilience, determination and grit from Cord McCoy, a legendary cowboy, former Professional Bull Riders athlete and three-time contestant on CBS Television’s The Amazing Race. McCoy’s story is one of perseverance in the face of extraordinary challenges. After surviving a near-fatal rodeo accident, he learned firsthand what it means to push through adversity, stay focused under pressure and keep moving forward when the odds are stacked against you. His closing keynote will bring those lessons to life in a way that resonates deeply with community bankers, who understand the value of persistence, discipline and commitment through changing markets, evolving customer needs and daily demands of leadership. Known nationally for competing alongside his brother, Jet McCoy, on The Amazing Race, Cord captured audiences with his competitive spirit, teamwork and determination. Off the screen, McCoy and his wife, Sara, have built a championship-caliber bull operation, raising several elite bulls, including 612 Ridin’ Solo, a two-time, back-to-back YETI World Champion bull. Through his work training bulls, producing Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association ProRodeos and promoting the Western lifestyle, McCoy brings an authentic voice rooted in hard work, heritage and perseverance.
During IBAT’s Regulatory Panel, you’ll hear directly from leaders representing the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. and Texas Department of Banking as they discuss emerging supervisory priorities, regulatory developments and what community banks should have on their radar. Moderated by Christopher Williston, IBAT president and CEO, the panelists will include Emily Greenwald, senior vice president, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; Troy Thornton, deputy comptroller for community banks, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency; Mark Taylor, regional director, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.; Charles Cooper, commissioner, Texas Department of Banking.
The convention will also have plenty of entertainment, including a Casino Night on Sunday, September 20. Unwind after dinner with a lively game of blackjack, craps, poker or roulette. Or, if gambling is not in your wheelhouse, get your competition hat on and play bingo with our professional bingo caller. Dessert, light bites and bar service will be available throughout the evening. The following day’s agenda will include a general session, breakout programs and the association’s annual awards luncheon. Topics will cover banking technology, risk management, regulatory issues and community engagement. Monday evening, September 21, will feature hospitality suites hosted by vendors and IBAT’s PAC Auction and Dinner. The convention concludes Tuesday, September 22, with the closing general session, annual meeting and breakfast.
