On March 20, S&P Global Market Intelligence released its annual rankings for 2023’s Best-Performing Community Banks (with assets between $3 billion and $10 billion), Best-Performing Community Banks with Assets Below $3 Billion and Top-Performing U.S. Public Banks (with more than $10 billion in total assets). Additionally, S&P Global Market Intelligence announced the annual rankings of Top-Performing Community Banks by Region for the Northeast, South Central, Southeast, West and Midwest. The annual rankings are based on returns, growth and funding, but place a premium on the strength and risk profile of balance sheets.
Texas banks populated S&P’s lists, including Laredo-based International Bancshares Corp. topping the list of best-performing U.S. public banks (with more than $10 billion in assets). IBC recorded a performance score more than 50 percentage points higher than the runner-up along with the highest adjusted tangible capital ratio, the second-highest EPS growth and the second-highest return on average assets among the 100 banks in the analysis.
Another Texas bank at the top of one of S&P’s lists is First State Bank of Odem, which ranked No. 1 as the top-performing bank in the South Central region of the U.S. First State Bank of Odem performed better in six performance metrics compared to the median for the 50 best-performing South Central community banks, as well as six metrics versus the median for all qualified banks in the region. The bank’s ranking was helped by its adjusted tangible common equity-to-tangible assets ratio of 15.74 percent, the ninth highest among the top 50 banks. The Odem Bancshares Inc. subsidiary has four branches, with $100.5 million in gross loans and leases and $161.6 million in total deposits as of the end of 2023.
