This year marks Shepherd-based Peoples State Bank’s golden anniversary and the bank recently celebrated the occasion in grand style. Bank staff, Texas banking industry leaders and members of the community gathered on October 2 in Shepherd for an anniversary bash that included barbecue, door prizes, give-aways, a performance by the Kenny Martin Band and bounce houses and other activities for the kids.
According to the East Texas News, Peoples State Bank was originally chartered as the San Jacinto State Bank on October 11, 1907. On September 21, 1921, the Guaranty Bank of Shepherd assumed ownership of the bank. In 1926, the name was changed to Peoples State Bank. In 1932, the bank merged with the Coldspring State Bank, but remained in Shepherd and did not open a branch in Coldspring again until 1996. A third location in Livingston was opened in 1998. All three locations are in the vicinity of Lake Livingston.
