American Banker has released its 2024 list of the “Best Banks to Work For,” which includes nine banks based in Texas. Northbrook, Illinois-based First Bank Chicago was ranked No. 1 in this year’s list among 90 banks in the 12th annual ranking. The banks on the 2024 list range in size from the 52-employee First Federal Savings & Loan Association in Pascagoula, Mississippi, to SouthState Bank in Winter Haven, Florida, where the workforce exceeds 5,200 people.
A two-step process determined this year’s Best Banks to Work For. The first consisted of evaluating each participating bank’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25 percent of the total evaluation. The second consisted of employee surveys aimed at assessing the experiences and attitudes of individual employees concerning their workplace. This part of the process was worth approximately 75 percent of the total evaluation.
According to the survey, American Banker notes that the banks that made the list “tend to prioritize engaged leaders, a strong corporate culture, job training and advancement and a feeling of belonging within the organization. Generous employee benefits—such as paid time off to volunteer and regular employee appreciation events—were also key, as was making time to have fun as a group.”
The top Texas bank on the list is Lubbock-based Peoples Bank, ranked No. 6. This marks the seventh time the bank—led by Larry Allen, chair and CEO—has received this honor.
“We are thrilled that for the seventh consecutive year, we made the Top 90 ‘Best Banks to Work For’ list,” says Paul Weaver, CEO of Odessa-based SouthWest Bank, which is ranked 83 on the list. “The survey and awards program is designed to identify and honor banks with the best cultures for helping employees thrive. Our employees are at the heart of our successes, and we are committed to providing an environment that allows them to thrive both professionally and personally. We believe in treating our team like family and empowering them to provide the best service to our customers.”
