Newly Christened Blake J. Boyd Memorial Stadium Honors Former Peoples Bank President

August 17, 2023

Larry Allen, Lubbock-based Peoples Bank CEO and chairman, has announced a partnership with Slaton Independent School District to rename the Slaton High School football stadium the Blake J. Boyd Memorial Stadium in honor of a revered Texas banker from the area.

“BlakeBlake J. Boyd, a longtime Slaton resident and community leader, passed away in April after fighting a courageous battle against cancer. He began his banking career in 1980 at Lubbock National Bank, where he served as a part-time teller while attending college. In 1985, he served as an examiner with the Texas Department of Banking until 1992. Boyd later served as president and CEO of Citizens Bank in Slaton. In 2012, he joined the Peoples Bank family as president and also served on the board of directors of Peoples Bancorp, the bank’s parent company.

Boyd enjoyed attending local athletic events and stock shows, and supporting his community. You could find him in the stands cheering on the Tigers every Friday game night.

“Blake Boyd [was] a beacon of strength and generosity,” says Shelli Crow, Slaton ISD superintendent. “Though cancer took him too soon, his legacy shines through new signage dedicated in his memory by Peoples Bank throughout Slaton ISD. The new signage will not only promote pride in our schools, but also honor a brave soul who faced a difficult battle with grace. In each display, his name is etched with love—a reminder that even in loss, giving and hope can transform lives.”

The Slaton Tigers will officially open the fall 2023 football season at the Blake J. Boyd Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. on August 25.
